Free templates to download and make your own Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 October 2007

Some of you may have read my post about the new parameters you can add to Joomla 1.5 templates - to help you get started playing with them, why not grab some free templates and convert them to comply with Joomla 1.5?

http://www.freecsstemplates.org is a great place to get started - their templates are simple and easy to preview/download plus the CSS they've used is clean; so you'll be able to understand how the it all comes together before adding in Joomla module positions etc...

Oh, and once you've got em working - make sure you let people in the Joomla community know where to download them; free templates really help newbies get started quickly and offer an alternative to the bloated pay-for-joomla-template market that really offers too much junk and confuses people. :)

Questions on Converting
written by CJ, April 06, 2008

In the article above you mentioned that there is a way to convert the free templates from the freecsstemplates.com site. I am new to Joomla and have no clue as to how to do this. Is there anyway you can explain it to a less technical person like me? Thanks, CJ

Converting

It doesn't actually say there is a way to convert a free template (implied html / CSS) to a joomla template, he suggests you give it a go. To convert an existing template to Joomla you need to convert the layout and CSS styling into a series of files joomla will understand. If you take a shot at producing a basic template for joomla (see heaps of joomla templates tutorials available), you'll find out how content layout and styling are combined in Joomla via templates. You can then take the free template you want and convert it to a joomla template. There are also a number of sites which will take a HTML/CSS style template and convert it to joomla for you. For example http://orewapalms.co.nz/ is a site which comes as a sample html/CSS layout in Dreamweaver MX - we took this layout and converted it to a joomla template. By creating a table layout php / html files and adjusting the existing style sheet into template.css for use with joomla. Give basic template building a go start with a table template and then move to tableless and you'll find it interesting and useful Have fun
