joomla & applications 2 : cakephp Print E-mail

picture_13One of the most active projects in the world of rapid-application development with php recently has been Jake - a new bridge between cakephp and joomla.

Some hard-core php peops claim that cake is much more delicious than Ruby on Rails and can do a whole bunch of whizbang madness very easily.... so this comes as really exciting news to the Joomla community methinks.

At the moment, it seems that there is lots of work within the cake community to make CMS' using it, so as bugs get worked out with this new bridge I expect to see more cakers embracing Joomla and working on projects that could really add some neat functionality to the CMS.

I'm still investigating the usefullness of Fabrik beyond custom contact and other simple forms with database recording and table-display btw...

Is anyone reading this familiar with Cake?  What are your thoughts?

New to Cake
written by Jen, May 07, 2007

I'm just starting a job where I'm working with CakePHP. I'm not even familiar with PHP yet, as this is new territory for me, but I can already see that CakePHP has a HUGE range of applicability. It seems very flexible and yet the structure makes it easy to learn and understand new applications. It will be interesting to see how Jake offers new approaches to joomla. Looking forward to hearing more!

Cake saved my marriage
written by Nick Steele, June 28, 2007

Seriously though; I think CakePHP is better than ruby on rails because Ruby is so damned new and unstable that code you write today will very likely not work with the latest build next year. This just frosts my cookie. Also, Ruby on Rails really leaves a lot to be desired as far as an MVC platform goes; it is very basic and does not have many features. Cake has many more features and is much faster than ROR. It's also more intuitive; you barely need a manual. Forget that with ROR. It's manual will bash you over the head a lot. I think the ROR advocates have very little experience with any other MVC and assume that ROR is as good as it gets. What a mistake! Cake tastes great and keeps you alive. Lots of people want Ruby on Rails but when they get it it just sits there and looks pretty, and maybe cuts you. I tried Fabrik too and it seems like a lost cause to me (maybe it has some uses for people that aren't very familiar with PHP though?). Including inline PHP seems much quicker, at least for me.

I've been getting more and more used to CakePHP and while I like the basic concept of it, it's not intuitive for beginners. Too much of the code is shortcutted, which means if you aren't familiar with CakePHP you have to look around and find out what's going on "behind the scenes". I think it's one of those things where you first experience will be very frustrating, but after that it will be smooth sailing.

CakePHP Rocks
written by Joshua , May 30, 2008

I currently am running Joomla 1.0.12 for MyPraize.com, but the problem is, as you edit the CORE Joomla files, it makes upgrading a pain, because you have to track all your core changes. This has been a HUGE source on contention with me. I have been looking for a while to rewrite MyPraize in Cake and have been watching it's progress for a while, but there are a lot of things I love about Joomla... Jake makes the scenario a much easier decision, I can still write most of the site in Cake, but still have a support Joomla framework for using other peoples components and such.. Great idea, I think Jake is great, and Cake Rocks
