I'm going to be brief here, despite the fact that this is my first post in a while and should establish an excuse for my recent negligence in maintaining whyjoomla? :) ...

Part of the reason I haven't been too active in posting is because I've been deeply entrenched in the wonderful world of Drupal .  Its reminded me of something pretty fundamental about Joomla - you see, they're both great CMS' though Drupal is more geared towards online application development (making really custom dynamic sites that use a database characteristically) and Joomla, well, Joomla is really fantastic at being a CMS and taking people beyond blogging. 

It can get daunting, especially for newbies, when trying to plan a new site using Joomla - faced with the over-1300 options for extensions , the abilities of this CMS feel limitless but its important to remember that just because daddy said 'anything in the store' doesn't mean you should get the crystal vase you might break and put your finger prints all over.

I'm going to be turning my attention to posting info that will help people get started with Joomla - those of you who want to build some cool sites which aren't going to make you a web 2.0 gajillionaire but allow you to get geeking with ease...

I agree....mostly. posted by Cory on 2007-02-10 Hey Q, I mostly agree with you here. I've been working with Drupal recently, and I have to say, I really like it. However, it is not nearly as intuitive as Joomla, IMHO, and creating a theme for Drupal is a nightmare compared to creating a Joomla template. I'm glad to see that you haven't been My disagreement comes in the last paragraph of your post. In it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), I think you are characterizing Joomla as a hobbyist's toy. Granted, Joomla is a great toy for any web hobbyist, but it is so much more than that. It is a great tool for web professionals to develop some outstanding sites. Honestly, I can really see a "web 2.0 gajillionaire" arising out of the Joomla community, especially after 1.5 is released. Here's where I see the "gajillionaire" coming from. At the moment, all the high-end programming geeks in the community are spending their time and efforts developing commercial components to sell to the rest of us to use in our own si... Quote

I just discovered J! posted by Curtis Earl on 2007-02-27 i recently started a sports site. my goal was to run my own blogging site. i've been posting solid articles which become the property of whatever site i submitted to. i got the idea to start my own site, invite my favorite writers and build a community. Together we could combine and sell our work while remaining true to our purpose. After staring into the software abyss, i settle on WordpressMu. My site is 2 weeks old and i'm knocking it into shape. but WordpressMu is clunky and i spend much of my time staring at code guessing which function does what. i dont mind the work, but i do mind that for all my work, nothing i create will be as dynamic or attractive as these J! sites i see out there. WPMU is 1.0 and everyone appears to be guessing. Is J! a reasonable alternative? can i create a central news site featuring feeds and polls and game, but also allow users to create personal blog spaces? Quote
