blogging with joomla, PART1 Print E-mail
Monday, 18 September 2006

Blogs are great tools for quickly publishing snippets information.  Everyone from children to small businesses love them and even large corporates have adopted an emotional relationship to this new catch-word; 'blog.'

What I find pretty funny though is that in the recent rush to get blogging, a lot of people have jumped into platforms like blogger or wordpress without considering scalability.  Now, that's not to denounce the merits of blogging or using a hosted blog service but I think that blogging should just be an aspect of commercial, as well as personal, online presence.

In this series of posts, I'll be examining Joomla as a next-level platform for blogging - that extends the simple function of quick-publishing by allowing articles to be longer and inter-related whilst offering the ability to plug-in additional site features and functions as needs of a website grow beyond verbal diarrhea.

I highly recommend checking out those links just posted by the person @ Compass - they've written up a great detail on what extensions you need to get blogging with a Joomla site and then go on to explain why they took this approach to build their own site, which is cool cause PART2 of this topic will start framing Joomla re: the 'future of blogging' (both practically and philosophically)

There's Really No Need for Extensions for Basic Blog Functionality
written by I hate Spammy Bots but I Like Joomla, February 02, 2008

To quote the Compass Designs page - "Right now, there is no robust and feature rich blog extension for Joomla that will fufill the core features that is needed in a blog, and does it as a native (not a port) extension." My rant - it is completely redundant to install a blog component on Joomla as they are essentially doing the same thing. Also Compass Designs, if you are going to link to your own blog postings/link bait have the common sense not to use your own URL in your title as it is a dead giveaway that you are self promoting and trying to be discrete about it by having a deceptive title - I'm not saying your information isn't useful, just that it would be better to say 'We have wirtten up an explanation of the best Joomla blogging practices on our site [link]' Many people have said this on the Joomla forums and I will repeat it - why do you need a blogging component for a content management system? Isn't the whole purpose of a content management system to aid the process of content creation. My advice would be this. Create your Joomla posts for your 'blog' in a new section called 'blog', and have as many categories under 'blog' as necessary. Then add a comments component like AkoComment - note that AkoComment has the ability to add comments through the use of a JoomBot, so it can be added to any page within the CMS - this is only necessary if you want to have comments and is the only non-core feature I will discuss. You now basically have a working blog... In order to display your latest posts on the front page, simply enable the 'FrontPage' icon for your Joomla entry. Once you feel it is no longer relevant, remove the FrontPage check under the Administrator console for that category or by using the front-page manager. In order for people to be able to find your categories, you can create a directory listing using the menu feature for each category. You can actually create a blog style listing for your pages using the menu manager, although it will potentially create pagination issues for you - make sure you "no-index" your blog-style directory listings using the robots.txt file at the root directory. In conclusion it is quite possible to have a working blog based off Joomla core - you will just have to think about it and practice for a while until it becomes straight forward. Additionally if you only need a blog which is user updatable, my recommendation would be simply to create a static site off a Dreamweaver template and then have a WordPress or similar blog system installed in a 'blog' subdirectory. Unless your end user is a html expert, don't expect them to be able to use a full-blown CMS well - Joomla is basically designed for web designers / web developers.
