whyjoomla_sm_logoI've been posting sporadically to this blog for some time now, and we've been lucky to attract a few thousand people per month.  I generally advocate that a site's success doesn't solely reside in Google Analytics but instead, mainly in the feel of community participation it relays to people when they spend time on it.   In that respect, things are going well here - you guys post comments here and there fairly regularly and old threads are always being picked up for debate.

When I launched the blog I sought to answer its title question through the anecdotes and ponderings I was going to post to it.  Though, in the past few months - with Joomla 1.5 being released and a whole stack of new extensions being released for it, I'm still curious to hear why you - the Joomla community at large, choose to use it as your platform of choice for building websites.

So - please feel free to be as candid as you'd like, post a comment below to answer the simple question...

Joomla makes it quick and easy to get a site up fast and reasonably secure. With its almost infinite extensions/mods/plugs, I can charge my clients less because I'm not sitting there for hours or days coding. Just an hour or so pasting and formatting. I can sit down with the client and change the websites look and feel very quickly which saves time. Normally I can turn a website around in under a day. If I have to do any amount of real coding, I charge double. So its a win win for my small biz.

I use Joomla for projects that don't require user profiles but do require constant updates. As long as I don't need ACL and the site is going to be bigger than a few pages, then Joomla works great.
Infinite possibilites

The amount of extensions is what really drew me to Joomla. The fact that I can get a impressive site up and running in short order was enticing to me. Before Joomla, I created most of my sites from scratch which was time consuming and expensive. now my clients can get a better product with practically limitless add on ability for a fair price.
supporting open source

I'm no coder but maintain my own site. A computer crash caused me to lose the drag-and-drop software I'd previously purchased and used to build my site's first incarnation. I'd already been having issues with the functionality of that software and so was shopping for alternatives. My husband (who's also not a coder but a more knowledgeable and bigger geek than I am) was using Joomla for his blog and recommended I take a look.

My first exposure to using CMS has been at times frustrating BUT I've toughed it out for two primary reasons. To echo Dan's comment, the growth potential with Joomla is astounding. More importantly, though, I've become a huge fan of open source software and am transitioning to it as much as possible. The free aspect is a bonus but the big draws of open source are the community environment which seems to maintain strong user support and *not* giving my money to another big company.
SEO with Joomla

Like many users, I enjoy the user-friendly Joomla administration panel and passionate community that has been providing us with great extensions, patches and templates since the early days. Great extensions such as sh404SEF for example, make Joomla SEO easier than ever.

I find that it cuts down on the time I spend in site development and so many of my colleagues are willing contributors its so user-friendly
Browser Updates

I know my away around an HTML editor like Dreamweaver, but many of my clients do not. Empowering customers to be able to do routine content maintenance themselves without any knowledge of HTML or CSS is a big deal. Plus they don't need to buy and install any desktop software.

For my own sites, I also find it convenient while traveling to be able to update them from any Internet connection. My netbook is too small and limited to run the Adobe suite, but it runs Firefox just fine.
